• Black, 1-inch, three-ring binder: Add notebook paper for class notes or information, such as test dates, etc. Students can arrange to have one binder at school and one at home if backpack space is an issue.

• The appropriate book for your grade level
   

• A Pencil: This should be ready at all times to mark your part or take notes.
   

• Your instrument and accessories:  In good working condition!
   

• Willingness to try your best:  This positively effects your grade while the opposite is also true.
   

• Promptness:  Arrive to class on time and be in your seat, ready for rehearsal.
   

• “Professional” and positive rehearsal behavior: Being responsible for your choices and actions so that learning may go on uninterrupted.

Books will be used throughout the year to teach scales, etudes (studies) in different keys and positions, bowing techniques and other new concepts. 7th and 8th grade classes will be using a “class set” of warm-up and technique books.

• 6th grade students will need to purchase Essential Elements 2000, Book 1 for their particular instrument at one of the local music stores or online.

Students are expected to practice regularly outside of class rehearsals and prepare lesson assignments. An appropriate goal to aim for is at least 30-45 minutes each day or 3-4 hours a week. 

Private lessons are an excellent option for your student to excel in their playing.  Students in lessons tend to learn music quickly, have confidence in their playing and have opportunities to study and play even more music.  Please see me if you would like references.
 

Performances are a type of assessment for members of the PLMS orchestras.  They are like a final exam on a particular piece or period of music, or the game after weeks of practices.  Each Orchestra member is expected to be in attendance for the complete concert, at the appointed time, with their music, instrument and the proper attire.
 

Your grade could be affected since you receive several points for each performance. If you have a prior commitment, you must give me written notice of the conflict at least 10 days before the performance.  If you miss a concert or special rehearsal, you must see me for an assignment to make up the missed points, even if the absence was excused.  The final decision on the points to be applied will be up to the Director.

Remember—Your absence affects the entire Orchestra and cannot be made up totally by extra work or attending other concerts.
 

Uniforms:

This makes us look professional!  There is a navy blue PLMS Music Department polo shirt that students are required to purchase in time for our November performances. Our groups wear this shirt and black pants/socks/shoes. Keep your eye out for the order form and let me know if your student requires financial assistance, as this uniform is required.
