Roundup: Skyline girls fall one point short at Cascade Classic

By George Edgar

Special to The Seattle Times

SAMMAMISH — The Skyline Spartans almost made the most of a second chance against Bert Church of Alberta, but fell in the final seconds of the Cascade Classic girls basketball tournament championship game.

Ashley Hill of Bert Church sank a free throw with 1.1 seconds remaining for the deciding point as the Chargers from Canada defeated the Spartans 63-62 Friday at Eastlake High School.

The Chargers tried to set up a winning basket, but Hill was called for a traveling violation with 5.2 seconds remaining. Skyline tried to inbound the ball but Mackenzie Barney fouled Hill as they went for the ball, and Hill made the first of two free throws to give her a game-high 22 points.

The deciding free throw capped an up-tempo affair that was a rematch of a Wednesday game won 61-58 by Bert Church (12-3), the second-ranked Class 4A team from Alberta. Skyline (3-3) qualified as a wild-card team for the semifinals of the 12-team tournament and defeated Dorsey of Los Angeles Thursday to make the final.

Junior guard Madison Maloney led the Spartans with 17 points, and senior guard Samantha Angel scored 13.

"This was a good game all the way through," Skyline coach Jodi Sackville said. "The girls played hard."

In the final, Skyline trailed 41-35 at halftime, but roared back to take a 51-43 lead after holding the Chargers to two points in the third quarter.

"We played them better than the first time," Sackville said. "The second time, we still made silly mistakes, but were able to adjust to what they were doing."

In the fourth quarter, the Chargers rallied to tie the score at 62 on a layup by Hill with 46 seconds remaining.
