Opposites the Same
By Sarah Elderkin
Life is death
And white is black.
Light is dark
And forward is back.
A coral sky, a darkened eye,
A flash, a blink, it's gone.
Zero is forever,
After is before.
Deferent’s the same,
And less is more.
A twisted tree, another me,
A flash, a blink, it's gone.
A's after Z,
And fake is real,
Up is down,
And give is steal.
An abstract stone, I'm left alone,
A flash, a blink, I'm gone.
Before
By Sarah Elderkin
A drop of sun,
A strip of rain,
A piece of a broken soul.
Light is captured,
Water confined,
Love stolen from a heart.
Before the light,
Before the air was moist,
And all people still felt whole,
The sun was dark,
And water was dry,
And loving people roamed.
Fake Friends
By Sarah Elderkin
A whisper, a secret,
A knot is undone.
Something they promised
They’d never tell anyone.
You thought they were nice,
A real, true friend,
But because of that day,
Your friendship will end.
You were best friends forever,
Yet still they let fly,
A secret you told them,
Now you just sit
And cry.
A whisper, a secret,
A knot is redone.
Now a rumor is born
Of what they’d “never tell anyone.”
Beyond
By Sarah Elderkin
You stare at the stars, wonder where you really are.
What’s in this galaxy and what is beyond?
You look past the mountain and thoughts flow like a
fountain.
What’s in this world and what is beyond?
You gaze at the cloud and your questions speak loud:
What’s in this universe and what is beyond?
You gape at a distant shape and wonder what else is
in this cape
That drapes over us all, now what is beyond?
You glance down at the dirt, wonder if one day it’ll
be burnt
By people who wonder “What is beyond?”
Beyond is a sunset waiting to be found.
Beyond is a forest with sparkles on the ground.
Beyond is a river that’s water runs pink.
Beyond is a fairytale where wishes come true with a
wink.
Beyond is a place that believes in once upon a time.
Beyond is a place that doesn’t know how to rhyme.
Beyond is a cradle rocking peacefully as a dove.
Beyond is a dream of friendship and love.
Alone and Different
By Sarah Elderkin
A single star in the night,
A single song taking flight.
A lonely tree in a plain,
A lonely tear in the rain.
A solitary wolf,
A solitary stream,
A changed tune,
A changed moon.
A single cloud in the sky,
A single tear in my eye.
A lonely flower in the weeds,
A lonely button with the beads.
A solitary house,
A solitary mouse,
A changed key,
A changed sea.
A different me,
A different plea,
I am changing,
It’s all rearranging.
I have to re-explore,
I’m not myself anymore.
