Dear Parents of Mrs. Knutson/Mr. Ensey’s Humanities Plus Class:

As an important part of your child’s learning this year, 6^th grade Plus students will be required to complete 10 hours of Service Learning between now and May 11, 2008. Service learning involves service, written reflection and a formal presentation to the class on the experience. The concept of “giving back” to one’s community in which one lives is an important part of meaningful citizenship in our culture. Linking this goal to the language arts and social studies curriculum will be a critical part of the student experience. Today, students were given a packet that includes the guidelines and procedures for researching and contacting non-profit agencies. We encourage students to select service that they will enjoy and to work with friends if desired and when possible. This is also a rewarding activity to do as a family.

The completed Service Learning Project is due May 11th, 2008, but we will have check points with your child throughout the year. The following week, students will share their service learning experiences with their peers through a presentation of their posters. The posters will decorate the PLMS halls in hopes of inspiring others to do volunteer work over the summer and beyond.
