Comprehension Questions for Book Talks

 

Directions: Choose one question from each section to discuss during your book talk with Mr. Ensey. Prepare ahead of time by typing out your answers. Highlight the questions you will discuss.

 

FICTION:

 

·         Why did you select this book?

·         Describe the main character’s appearance and burning question(s)

·         Describe the setting and how it influences the characters or plot

·         What is your opinion of the author’s ability to hook you or not?

·         What did the author have to know to write this book?

·         How is the main character changing?

·         Who would/should read this book and why?

 

Craft exploration: CHARACTER

·         How does the author create a believable character whose struggles and insights are worthy of a reader’s interest and concern?

 

Craft exploration: THEME:

·         What details does the author emphasize?

·         What is the writer trying to say about life?

·         What do you think the theme of this book is? Is there more than one?

                                               

Craft exploration: CHARACTER & SETTING:

·         How does the setting impact the character?

·         Are the characters believable and are their goals achievable?

·         Why do or don’t you like the main characters?

·         What events have shaped the character into the person s/he becomes?

 

Craft exploration: POINT OF VIEW:

·         Who is telling the story?

 

Craft exploration: PLOT:

·         How does the author create a believable and intriguing plot?  How does it engage you as a reader?

·         What is the biggest conflict and how is the character attempting to resolve them?

·         Are the resolutions believable and satisfying?

·         If you could be teleported into the story, how would you try to help the main character?

 

If your book was HISTORICAL FICTION:

 

·         When and where did the main character live?

·         Describe three events and/or people that shape the character’s life

·         Explain your opinion of the main character.

·         Why do you think the author chose to tell the main character’s story?
