Hoot
By Carl Hiaasen
Review by Brendan
The
opening paragraph grabs the reader’s attention.
·Put reader
right into the action
·Make reader
imagine the unimaginable (ie. It’s not everyday that a 13 year old girl is
accused of murder…)
·Don’t start
with “the book I read was…” That’s way too BORING! Hook us into the plot!
What would
it be like, moving from the vast hills and snowing mountains of Montana, to the flat,
hot, concrete land
of Florida? Moving from
your favorite home you ever had? Moving for about the tenth time? A young boy,
Roy Eberhart, starring in Carl Hiaasen’s award winning book, Hoot, would know
The
overall idea and plot are discussed, without giving away the ending
·Keep it short
and sweet, even if it’s a long book
·Just give the
reader the gist of the book. Be clear, make sense, don’t give away the ending
Roy is just an average
kid, who doesn’t get into trouble much. He just lies low, and acts casual. But,
when a new pancake house is being built in Coconut Cove, things start getting
different for Roy.
Vandalism starts to onslaught the construction site and Roy becomes part of it. He takes part of it
for a good reason of course… saving baby owls.
Describe
one exciting incident in detail
·Again, don’t
give away the ending
·Be clear
enough so that someone who HAS NOT read the book can follow
One of the
“pranks” they do to stop the bulldozers is alligators in the “Travelin’
Johnnies.” The police cop, Officer Delinko, steps into the portable potty, but
jumps right out in shock to see four crocodiles swimming in the water at the
bottom of the toilet.
End
the review with your opinion and recommendation
·Who might like
this type of book? (Sports fans? People that love to laugh? History buffs? Late
night readers that like to be freaked out?
·What did you
think? Is it worth reading? If it won an award, is it worth the hype?
I think
people who like funny, realistic fiction books would love this book. Its 300
pages of funny pranks and weird characters are definitely worth reading. This book
deserves five out of five stars. Also, just to let you know, they have a movie
on it, too.
