Welcome to Culinary Arts with Mrs. Oseran
There is a $20.00 Lab Fee for supplies. This
fee is our primary source for cooking supplies and is necessary for the
operation of Culinary Arts.
Each student needs to bring a large deep disposable
plastic container labeled with their name. The container will enable
the student to bring home samples of their cooking.
Attendance is important as we will spend most of our
time watching demonstrations and then cooking the recipe the next day in the
lab. Students are required to write out the recipes and needed equipment
before they can participate in the lab. Most demonstrations will take place
on Monday. and Thursday. You will want to check in with your
child those nights to see that they have completed the written portion of
the assignment.
The written portion of the lab is an important
opportunity for students to organize and prepare a work plan. A successful
work plan helps the students with time management and successful completion
of the cooking project. On Tuesday and Friday we will cook.
This is the student’s opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have
observed during the demonstration and to follow their work plan.
If your child is absent on cooking lab days they
will be required to complete the cooking assignment at home. They
will need a detailed note from you about how well they completed the recipe
and clean up. All make up work must be completed and turned in 7
days after the child returns to school for credit. Student should label
the make up assignment with the heading MAKE UP ASSIGNMENT to insure
getting the maximum points possible.
Students are organized into teams for the trimester and
are graded on how well they work together. Students will have leadership
opportunities several times during the trimester. This leadership role will
be as the kitchen teams head chef. Head chef‘s direct and assign
duties to team mates and are responsible to see that these duties are
carried out. Head chefs are responsible to the teacher for the proper
completion and clean up of the cooking project and lab.
Students are eligible to earn up to 100 extra credit
points during the trimester. Extra credit can be earned by cooking
class recipes at home for their families, cooking a recipe of their choice
or by visiting ethnic grocery stores. A parent note detailing how
well the student preformed the cooking and clean up duties is required
to earn extra credit.

help in class.
