Text Box: Students in the Issaquah School District have the opportunity to begin an instrument in orchestra as 6th graders at Pine Lake Middle School. This is a great opportunity for those students who didn’t get a chance to join in fifth grade, but would still like to learn an instrument in middle school!
Here’s the great part: there is no fee, the class is DURING the school day and we meet every day.
Students will have FOUR instruments to choose from. Check out my website to learn more about the instruments (click on “Beginners”)!
www.plms.issaquah.wednet.edu/teachers/ewingm
VIOLIN: The violin is the smallest and highest sounding of the string family.
VIOLA: The viola is an instrument that people are often fooled by. It looks like a violin and you play it like a violin, but it has the warm sounds of a cello (no high E strings if your student (or you!) cringe at the thought Text Box: of those high notes!).
CELLO: The cello is a larger, beautiful sounding instrument that the player must sit to play.
BASS: The double bass is the largest instrument, usually taller than the person who plays it. It is heard in orchestras and players at the middle school and high school are often also in jazz band.
GOOD NEWS FOR CELLO AND BASS PLAYERS: Since cellos and basses are bigger and harder to transport, we have instruments at the school that can be used in daily rehearsal. That way, a student can have one at home to practice on and use at concerts and one at school to use in class.
Please be aware that orchestra is a year-long commitment, and stress this to your student. There will be challenges in the year, but the pay-off is more than worth it, as I know you’ll see at our many concerts and performances.
I look forward to working with your student and please feel free to call if you Text Box: have any questions!

Middle School Registration: check the “Orchestra” box and note if you are a beginner. Also, include the instrument you are interested in. Note: this can change

Renter’s insurance is optional, but a good idea!
