Building History
In September of 1974 the school opened it's doors to
students as a Junior High. The building itself had been completed for a year,
but double levy failure meant that we couldn't furnish and staff it. (The
building was leased for a year to Kirkland Junior High because their old
building was destroyed by fire that summer.) After levy passage in February, the
designated principal took over, hired a secretary (Judy Simpson who recently
retired, but still comes to visit) and bookkeeper and began ordering furniture and supplies and hiring
teachers (only one, Mary Rogers, is still with us).
From the beginning, Pine Lake has been a strong school in academics, the arts,
music, drama, sports, student participation, activities, etc.. Students
and community have supported their school activities with annual magazine drives
since the beginning. Parents have always supported the school with their time,
special efforts and finances. Our PTSA started strong and continues to be
very active and enthusiastic.
Our staff and student population have risen and fallen over the years with the
top student numbers being about 900 just before Beaver Lake Middle School . The
1999-2000 school year was our largest enrollment to date.
Our students consistently score well on standardized
testing; our honor roll and honor society regularly include about one third of
our students. We endorse community service, and it is required for our
leadership groups and honor society members. Regular annual events include:
Curriculum Night, Open House, Hoe Down, Orange and Blue Day, Think First
Assembly, Lip Sync, Talent Show, Destination Imagination, Eighth-grade Party and
Promotion and a variety of new ones each school year.
We have suffered two significant fires at our
building--none during times when people were involved. We have lived and grown
through an assortment of schedule changes, administrative changes, the
shift to middle school, and our major remodel of 1997-1999. We boast the best
Library in the District!
